Car Jumps Curb In Old Town Monrovia

9/12/2008, 2:30 pm

A car jumped the curb on the east side of Myrtle Ave. in the 500 block.

The car was pulling into a parking spot when the elderly woman driver with a large cast on her left leg was not able to stop in time to keep from jumping the curb, striking a heavy city bench that was bolted to the sidewalk and smashing into the window of the recently opened Irish Gardener Shop.

No one on the street or the driver was inured.  The very heavy bench was thrown some distance form its original location and luckily did not hit anyone.  There was a lot of window glass on the hood of the car and sidewalk and as you can see the car sustained a lot of frontend damage.

I spoke with a woman who said she had been sitting on that bench just minutes before it was struck by the car.  From what I could see if she had been on that bench when it was struck she would have had very serious injuries or been killed.

This is only one of the very dangerous problems connected with this type of parking and the reason it has been abandoned by most cities.

I was saddened to see such damage from the car to the building. Quite frankly, I love the diagonal parking spaces. They are so convenient for me. It didn’t occur to me what a hazard they’d pose to business owners. I hate parallel parking, some people are so thoughtless they squeeze someone in and literally a person is stuck until someone comes and moves a car. That is frustrating. However, citizens sitting on city benches shouldn’t fear to be hit while enjoying the beautiful downtown area.
I can’t wait for Christmas; last year was the most beautifully lit, spectacular downtown light display of all. And with the blue mountains in the background at dusk, well, it just doesn’t get any better than this. I love Monrovia!!
