Santa Anita Canyon Fire 4/26/08 Update
The picture on left shows the fire in its early stage and the one on the right shows the fire about one hour later. The wind was out of the South West and had picked up some speed in the hour after the first picture was taken. Let’s all hope this is the last Smoke and Fire we see in our foothills this year.

[...] final local blog that will likely have some updates is Monrovia City Watch. He has one post so far but his blog in general is a good read on exposing what goes on in small [...]
Excellent coverage.
On a far less important note, I’ve blog rolled you under the category “L.A. Area Blogs”.
[NFLA] Update on Sierra Madre fire
From: Nature Friends Los Angeles [mailto:news@naturefriendsla.org]
From Malcolm Schenot ~~ I just talked to Bruce Anderson (Sunday, April 27 @ 9 am), who reports that he and Ken Symington were safely evacuated last night around midnight under mandatory evacuation orders because of the Sierra Madre fire. It started yesterday (Saturday, April 26) at 3 pm on Santa Anita Canyon Road just over the hill from Yucca Trail and the clubhouse. Bruce said the flames were visible from their house next to Nature Friends. They spent 6 hours wetting down their property and Nature Friends’ property as much as they could before evacuating. They are staying with our past president Daniel Morales in Alta Dena. Daniel came up and helped them evacuate. The canyon is now barricaded and no one is being let in or out. Please send out our good wishes and prayers for Ken, Bruce, our clubhouse, and all the people in the canyons in Sierra Madre.
From Malcolm Schenot ~~
I talked to Rosann Volmert @ 12:30 pm Sunday April 27.
She and Matt McCoy have not left the canyon and are there with other neighbors wetting down the land around the fire up the hill on Yucca Trail. So far the clubhouse and all the structures in the canyon are OK. Rosann said the fire is put down for now, but there are still flames further away, and they are just crossing their fingers that the wind does not pick up this afternoon and blow it back their way.
From Daniel:
We just received news from Matt and Rosann. They send us some pictures that we just posted on our website.
The fire came within 100 yards of the property and looks like things are now under control. However, no one can enter the canyon at this time. We will keep you updated as the information becomes available. Please keep sending your good thoughts.

Update from Cities site:
Monrovia Fire Department strike teams have been assisting with the Sierra Madre fire response. County helicopters are today using the Monrovia hillside helipad to pick up water for their drops. Monrovia FD continues to monitor the blaze as it burns away from the community. No Monrovia properties are in danger. Fire Department staffing remains at normal levels and hillsides are being patroled. Canyon Park is closed and will reopen as the situation dictates.
I just can’t wait untill they open the Monrovia Foothills Wildlife Preserve to hikers.
When we living in the foothills are told to evactuate, we can all meet down at the Aztec and get drunk and watch while our foothills burn down the sides of the hills and engulf our homes..
Update from Cities site:
The Monrovia Fire Department took a leadership role in pushing back the still-burning Santa Anita Fire, and remains involved today. No Monrovia properties are in danger. Fire Department staffing remains at normal levels and hillsides are being patroled. Canyon Park will reopen beginning Wednesday, April 30.
